The royal Kammu (Khmu') guards are carrying a sapling of the Bodhi tree from Sarnath, India under which the Buddha gave his first sermon after attaining enlightenment. The sapling was given to Crown Prince Savang Vatthana by Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru upon the former's visit to India. It is also important to note that before a royal ceremony is to be held in Luang Prabang, the provincial governor summons Kammu to participate. Most of them come from Ban Kaset in the area of Xieng Ngeun (personal communication from Damrong Tayanin, Co-Director Kammu Research Project, University of Lund, May 11, 2005).
