The Nelson Trophy

I IE Neion trophy for intra-mural athletics was presented to the Lniersity by Regent
P \elson in Decemcr, 1915. Interest in inter-collegc contests wa immediately
ncrunaedhb the1-   butiful award, the work of one of the country's Icading sculptors,
Iconard Cruncllo, and competition for the trophy started
it once. The race for the trophy in its first year, 1915-
1010, was so close as to cause most intense interest. The
:ollege of Agriculture won by the narrow margin of a
half-point over the College of Letters and Science, and
accordingly the trophy was placed in Agricultural ill,
where it remained until the following year, when the
College of Letters and Science won it. The third race for
its possession is now in progress, with several schools vicing
for the honor.
University coaches cooperated in designing a system of
corng for the trophy competition. Contests were divided
into four classes. In (lass I, schools were awarded points
in the order of their ranking as regards total number of men
)n varsity intercollegiate teams. (lass 11 presenrted the
maor inter-college sports, the order of finish of the schools
in the various tournaments being the basis of award of
points. The minor sports, in (lass Ill, have a smaller
R                     number of points awarded for the winning schools, and a
,till 11tmallet number at pint- are given for the winners in (lass IV, where the competition
depends largely upon individuals, instead of teams.
