• This 3.5" x 2.25" business card from about 1944 has a listing for George's Tavern, "Where Good Fellowship Reigns Supreme," on one side and on the other side a photograph of the tavern interior with owner George Lambries, Sr. behind the bar. He wears a white shirt, tie, and buttoned vest. Bar stools are lined along two sides of the bar, and liquor bottles and a cash register fill a counter in the background. George's Tavern was located at 1710 Western Avenue in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, not far from the West Side Baseball Park at the corner of South Sixteenth Street and Wollmer. A submarine veteran recalls that submarine crewmen training in Manitowoc for service on Manitowoc-built submarines had exercise drills at the West Side Park, also called West Field. When they could escape the scrutiny of drill instructors some of the crewmen would leave West Field and head for George's Tavern for a drink, to meet their girl friends, or to make a date.
