On the first page of the 1945 Eighth Street Bridge Log, bridge tender Harvey Weinert recorded the exact dates and times that the final six Manitowoc-built submarines passed through the bridge as they departed for service. On the inside front cover he inscribed "Life can be beautiful."
The log book is a 500 page bound "Shaw's Account Book S65-5-R." Daily entries record all traffic through the bridge, including every passage of the submarines during trials, accompanied by the tug Manshipco.
