about it and lots of big ships at the wharves. It
really looked lovely as we approached it. Of course the
first thing we did after lunch yesterday was to get a
cab and drive to Cook's, and inquire for mail. 7e didn't
much think there would be anything for us; so we were
agreeably surprised when we got a letter from "Papa" and
lots of clippings inside. Of course it was mailed on
May 6th, only two days after we sailed; so our news is
not very recent, but none the less welcome for that.
Te were awfully glad to get a letter, for it seemed a
long time since we left home, and we have come as much
as 4,500 miles all told, and it seems as if we had come
farther than that when we think of how we have steamed
along night and day for fifteen days. Of course we m
a few stops but we were going most of the time, and r
we are here, it seems very odd to be walking about or
land. Nan was gldd to get off the boat. I could hav
gone on sailing, if the ship had had the ventilating
apparatus working. I believe that must have been the
trouble that last night on board. Because till we reached
Naples there was lots of air, and after that it was close
and stuffy in the cabin, and state room, and we couldn't
sleep that last night; but we took a good nap yesterday
