Summary

• Lantern said to have been used at Fort Winnebago, Portage, 1828-1845. This six-sided hanging lantern is made of tin with glass windows. It is ornamented with a ball finial and a punched pattern in the upper section and a pointed pendant at the base. Traces of what may be the original gold paint remain on the tin frame.
• The lantern would have once held a candle and is said to have lighted the exterior of the soldiers' barracks at Fort Winnebago, an active United States Army garrison at the portage between the Fox River and the Wisconsin River from 1828-1845.
