Rand & Roemer Hardware, 205 North Eighth Street, was described in Manitowoc Illustrated 1891 as "being located near the harbor (which) was the perfect situation for this long-lived business, which outfitted countless ships in the Manitowoc waterway." The location was the future home of the First Federal Savings. In city directories by 1875 with just the Rand family, the company was incorporated in 1884 with capital of $76,000. Officers were Edwin H. Rand, Elijah K. Rand, and Jacob Roemer. This store carried all sorts of metalware, including piping for the "new" sewer and water systems in town.
