Leal Conselheiro Electronic Edition

The main goal of this project is to host an electronic critical edition of the Portuguese medieval text Leal Conselheiro to be used by scholars and university students.

Leal Conselheiro is a moral treatise written by Duarte, King of Portugal, completed towards the end of his life (1437–1438). It is one of the most relevant works in Portuguese literature prior to the Renaissance. In addition to being an outstanding example of conceptual prose in Portuguese, it has been seen as the most accomplished illustration of court culture in late medieval Portugal. The full text of the treatise exists only in one manuscript, kept at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, which has served as the basis for a handful of editions, published from the middle of the 19th century until 1998. This manuscript is undoubtedly, if not the most relevant, at least one of the few Portuguese bibliographic items of eminent significance kept in foreign institutions.

The edition is to be viewed as a work in progress since it will be updated on a regular basis according to new contributions from members of the team. Furthermore, the edition will stimulate interaction between the user and the displayed content. Users are welcome to suggest corrections on whatever aspect of the edition, and their contribution, when accepted, will be duly credited.

The project has been developed by two teams, one working in at the University of Lisbon, coordinated by João Dionísio and Pedro Estácio; the other working at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, coordinated by Paloma Celis Carbajal. All the content presented in this edition has been encoded with TEI P4.

Acknowledgements

The coordinators of this collaborative digital project would like to thank the following entities for supporting this initiative:

  • University of Wisconsin-Madison General Library System
  • Biblioteca da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa
  • University of Wisconsin Digital Collections
  • University of Wisconsin-Madison Memorial Library
  • Fundação Luso-Americana para o Desenvolvimento
  • Latin American, Caribbean and Iberian Studies (LACIS, UW-Madison)

The digitized images of Manuscrit Portugais 5 have been generously provided by the Bibliothèque Nationale de France for public display within this archive, even before their version in Gallica was made available. We hope that this generosity will find echo in other libraries and archives holding manuscripts that are of the utmost interest for the present electronic edition.

Apart from institutional support, this project would never have seen the light without the work, support and enthusiasm from:

  • TEI encoders: Laura Schmidli, Jason Doroga, William Straub, David McHugh, in Madison; Marta Grachat, Ana Neves, Sílvia Pedro, in Lisbon.
  • Digital librarians Peter Gorman, Steven Dast and Brian Sheppard, from UW-Madison, who have tailored solutions for the specificity of this project.
  • Arnaud Beaufort, Directeur général adjoint, Directeur des Services et des Réseaux, Bibliothèque Nationale de France.
  • Prof. Ivo Castro, Universidade de Lisboa, who successfully dealt with copyright issues.
  • Prof. António Emiliano, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, and Prof. Susana Pedro, Universidade de Lisboa (Centro de História-FL), who paved the way for a future documentary edition of Leal Conselheiro.
  • Along with Prof. Ellen Sapega, UW-Madison, who has been constantly present, giving precious advice, Prof. Helena Buescu and Prof. José Pedro Serra from Universidade de Lisboa were instrumental in creating the partnership among these two institutions that has allowed this project to happen.
  • The main editor of this electronic text, most cordially invites contributions of colleagues, by sending corrections, new information, and suggestions to joaodionisio[at]campus[dot]ul[dot]pt

  • University of Wisconsin Digital Collections
  • University of Wisconsin-Madison Memorial Library
  • Fundação Luso-Americana para o Desenvolvimento
  • Latin American, Caribbean and Iberian Studies (LACIS, UW-Madison)
