Summary

• Depiction of Colonel Kumamoto Masaji of the Imperial Guard artillery regiment at the Battle of the Yalu River which occurred from April 30-May 1, 1904. In the foreground, Kumamoto is sitting on a rock smoking with his binoculars on his left, while three officers stand in front of him observing the commotion on a hill in the background. On the hill, many soldiers are scrambling about, firing cannons, evacuating the wounded, running toward the front, or cheering. There are puffs of smoke in the sky, but no enemies are visible in this scene. Overall the colors are subtle variations of earth tones with red accents highlighting the soldiers’ hats. The officers' belts are black and buffed to shine while their sword sheaths are shining silver. Interestingly all are wearing straw sandals.
