• Portrait of Ainsworth R. Spofford, who as the sixth Librarian of Congress expanded the role of the Library of Congress from a Congressional reference library into a national institution. He worked with Congress to pass the copyright law of 1870, which required two copies of every book, pamphlet, map, print, photograph, and music be deposited with the Library in order to register for copyright.
