Indian mascot on Cartwright Center

Summary

• The school and team mascot was the Indian, first voted in by the student body in 1937. In 1973, Chancellor Kenneth Lindner called for an end of the Indian caricature used since 1937 on all grade report forms and other university publications (see page 2 of February 1, 1973 issue of the Racquet newspaper). The symbol seen here on the north entrance to Cartwright Center was considered acceptable by the Chancellor. The Indian was the school and team mascot until 1989 when the school voted to change it to the Eagle.
