Summary

• Porcelain place setting hand-painted by Bella Anderson, Waukesha, 1884-1886. This set of hand-painted china consists of a teacup and saucer and a larger coordinating plate. The white porcelain blanks were manufactured by Charles Field Haviland of Limoges, France and decorated by Bella Anderson of Waukesha, Wisconsin. Each item is overglazed with an orange ground and gilded rim and is decorated with a whimsical image of owls. The plate features a pair of owls, one in a white veil, seated together on a branch; the cup has a similar owl couple, one in a white kerchief; and the saucer features four owls seated on two branches. The gilded handle of the cup is molded in the shape of an insect's wings.
• The plate and saucer are marked "H & Co./L" in green underglaze and the cup is marked "H & Co./-." The plate is signed "Bella Anderson/ 1886" in green. The saucer is signed "Bella Anderson/ Waukesha/1885" in pink. The cup is signed "Bella Anderson/ Waukesha/ 1884" in orange.
