A handwritten inscription on the base reads: "Pottered by W. P. Murrey, 1868. 5 miles north of Brodhead, Green County, Wis."
A native of New York state, William P. Murrey settled in Wisconsin about 1844. He was primarily a farmer, first in Waukesha County and later in the Town of Decatur, Green County. This jug was donated to the Wisconsin Historical Society by Murrey's grandson.
