Summary

• The exterior of this jug is coated with a purple-brown engobe and decorated with reddish-orange and white slip. The stylized leaf and flower motif on the sides and front is repeated on other examples of slipware from the St. Asaph’s tradition, most notable a pitcher with a white ground and polychrome slip in the Henry Ford Museum and a fragmentary pitcher excavated beneath an early nineteenth-century dormitory at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Another pitcher by the same potter has simple stylized leaf repeats on the front and sides (see Ritter 16).
