The color of terra-
cotta is governed by the
character of the local clays
used in its manufacture.
Until recently the red
brick used almost exclu-
sively in  the  Eastern
States necessitated  the
employment of blood-red
terra-cotta, but since the
low rates of freight have
of late years enabled our
architects to use exten-
sively different colored
bricks from various locali-
ties, the demand for other
tints of terra-cotta has
increased.  It has been

of the material has little relation to its strength or
durability. The weather-resisting quality of burned clay
is due to the presence of metallic oxides, which act as
fluxes in the process of burning, thus cementing the parti-
cles of silica and alumina together, the color being im-
