DIRECTIONS FOR MAKING Goon STEREOTYPES
The box must be heated before a good cast
can be made. This is done by taking one or more
blank casts before placing matrix. Matrix must
be heated in a flat position before casting. This
may be done by placing it upon the hot bed of
casting box, weighting it to prevent curl. Casts
should be made on smooth cardboard, placed
under bearer gauges, extending beyond the
bearers and also extending two inches beyond
mouth ofcasting box.Anothercardboardshould
be placed over all gauges, overlapping them in
all directions. Cardboard is a better conductor
of stereo metal than cast iron. Casts should be
made at the bottom of the box, and centered
between sides of the box.

of type-high by base-high bearer
gauges and two side type-high by
11 point bearer gauges. A set of
bearer gauges consists of two side
gauges with handle and one end
gauge.
Casting boxes Nos. 100, 103, 200,
204 have single handles for lifting
the covers. Other sizes have two
handles, one on each side, as illus-
trated, for lifting the covers.
Cored Casting Boxes for casting
cored type-high plates, will also
cast solid plates, type-high or base-
high when the cores are detached.
As regularly made the cores are
spaced to cast columns of 12,121/2
or 13 pica widths, by placing the
thin gauge the proper distance
from the outside gauge. The cores
are detached easily.
