Summary

• Redwork quilt with the names of German-American families in Milwaukee, 1890-1900. This quilt is made up of 90 white cotton blocks embroidered in red thread and quilted in concentric circles. Each block features the name of a German-American family or individual living in Milwaukee in the 1890s.
• The description of this quilt from the Milwaukee County Historical Society reads: "Members of Milwaukee's leading German-American families created blocks for this quilt during the 1880s, using red embroidery floss to add their names and favorite designs. Among the families represented are the Schnechs, Seefelds, Vilters, Adlers, and Lemkes. The names of clergymen from various German-American churches of the period were also included. The completed blocks were assembled by Mary Perechbacher [sic], the mother of the donor, in 1900." Marie (Mary) Mueller married Otto Perschbacher (1861-1939) in Milwaukee in 1887. Mary and Otto appear in the 1900 federal census for the city of Milwaukee. According to the census, they were both born in Wisconsin to German-born parents.Quilt
