• A detailed bus schedule showing connections to Sheboygan, Green Bay, Appleton, and Two Rivers is printed on a large signboard affixed to a chain link fence at the shipyards of the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. During World War II the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company recruited workers from throughout northeast Wisconsin and provided bus transportation for many of them. As shown on the sign, the shipyards ran three shifts daily, with bus service for each shift. Other workers who drove cars were encouraged to save rationed gasoline and tires by sharing rides. Slogans on the bus schedule sign urge “If you drive your car share a ride.” This picture was published in the January-February 1944 issue of Keel Block, the company’s employee newsletter.
