In this small picture from the 1944 Flambeau, four Lincoln High School students, one using a wooden pointer, stand next to a blackboard on which an aeronautical diagram has been drawn. The boys, identified left to right as Martin (Marty) Severson, Gerald (Jerry) Wilda, David McDermand, and Cal Stein, were students in a Pre-Flight class at the Manitowoc, Wisconsin high school. During World War II Lincoln high school introduced various "pre-induction courses" to help students prepare for a specific service in the armed forces, including pre-flight, electricity, radio, drafting, and auto mechanics. The Flambeau was the school's annual yearbook.
