Front and back of a World War II era War Food Administration Achievement Award presentation card with an Achievement Award pin attached. The War Food Administration, a federal agency within the Department of Agriculture, regulated prices, production and distribution of agricultural products and services during World War II. It recognized outstanding efforts of companies involved in the production, processing, and distribution of food during the war, and in turn employees of these companies received individual “A Award” pins like this. As shown here, the front of the pin featured a large “A” with the words “Achievement Award” and “Food for Freedom.” The back of the presentation card carries a message from President Franklin Roosevelt that starts “Food is a decisive weapon of war.” This pin was presented to Manitowoc, Wisconsin resident Bernard Schwarz. The line for the name of the company for which he worked is not filled in on the presentation card. These images are copyright 2007 Young Communications Inc.
