Visual display of the Frederick Jackson Turner

Frederick Jackson Turner

  • ca. 1888-ca. 1890
  • Portrait of Frederick Jackson Turner, whose seminal work "The Significance of the Frontier in American History", spawned the eponymous term "The Turner Thesis". This posited that American-style democracy centered around the conquering of a frontier, result of which (according to Turner) was a lack of interest in high culture, egalitarianism, and violence.
