cylinder, left barrel modified choke
makes a good double. Although there
are some who prefer the left barrel
full choke for faraway shots, I do not
think this necessary for thicket shoot-
ing. In spite of this statement I must
bear in mind that there are shooters,
good ones at that, who use repeating
shotguns with full choke boring for
grouse. These shooters, as most of
the double gun men, use loads of 712
chilled shot which are ideal for grouse.

W HILE hunting grouse with a
dog is often more productive be-
cause the animal will sniff them out
from their hiding, yet there is plenty
of sport to be had without one.
Hunters walking slowly without
caution through the woods will flush
plenty of birds. It does not pay to be
stealthy about it for the grouse will
not flush too quickly when they know
where you are. Going quietly will
cause the birds to become very sus-
picious and they will flush far ahead
of you.
It is better to follow up every flushed
bird than to explore a lot of new cover,
for then you are sure of game ahead
which will come up again. And re-
mnember, that a wounded bird will
hide and is hard to find because of its
protective coloring. When several
men are hunting together the only safe
method is to deploy, army style, and
keep moving that way. From time
to time let out a whoop or two to
let the others know that you are abid-
ing by the rule. Under no circum-
stances should one shoot low when
there are others in close proximity.
Grouse shooting is always hard go-
ing and the gunner who bundles up
like an Eskimo is very uncomfortable.
Therefore, let light gunning clothes be
the order of the day.

        Rubber Recoil Pod?
DEAR GUN EDITOR:
   Recently I purchased a Model 94
Win. carbine from a friend and find
that it is too short in the stock for
me. I have very long arms, and this
rifle kicks me all over the place. It is
a 30-30 caliber. I have owned such a
caliber before but never in the carbine
style. Do you advise putting on a rub-
ber recoil pad to lengthen the stock
and to absorb some of the recoil?
             L. C. B., New Jersey.
/JlS.
This question is indeed a coin-
cidence inasmuch as an acquaintance
of mine seems to have solved just such
a problem. His gunsmith advised that
a new stock be ordered for the rifle.
Due to the shape of the carbine
stock it is almost impossible to turn
out a satisfactory piece of work with

mits the energy of the cocking spring
in the simplest, most direct manner.
There is no lost motion.
