BERYLLIUM

No statistics axe available for the production of beryllium or beryl in
the United States. During 1932 several, discoveries Qf~ beryl deposits. were.~
reported, and developmen1~ worlç was undertaken in Colorado, Nevada,
North Carolina,. SQuth. Dakota, and Wyoming. The principal sources of beryl,
however, ai~e mica and feldspar operat~ons, in New York, New England, North
Carolina, and South Dakota, where ~he beryl is rçcovered, as a byproduct
in ample tonnages to meet tjie. present consumption,. . ' ' ' '
The Beryllium ,Corpo~ation (formerly the Beryllium Development CorpQr~tion),
consolidated its Cleveland experimental plant and Detroit laboratory in a
new p1an~t at Marysvile, .I~'1ich., during 1932, and produces beryllium oxide,
beryllium, and master alloys of beryllium with copperand~nickel to supply'
an. increasing ilemand for these products. It is reported that the Beryllium
Corporation contemplates gicreasmg its plant capacity durmg 1933
"Berylliuim'is the newest of the rare metals to be listed among' enginneermg
materials That it is now available in commerical form is due largely to the
efforts of the Beryllium Corporation m the United States and Siemens &
Halske m Germany These firms have devote4 many years of research to the development
of processes for the production of a ~arketabla product The factor that delayed
more rapid development has been the threatened shortage of raw material This,
difficulty has in a measure been overcome, and a moderate supply of beryl,
the only important ore, seems now assured Although no smgle deposit has been
reported which would sustam a large production of beryllium metal, enough
ore is available to permit considerable expan~ion Prospectmg and deve1opme~1t
work during recent years have indicáte4 possible, extensive ore deposits.
Prices —Imported beryllium metal is nominally quoted at $135 per pound,
whereas domestic prices applying to production in this country are ' based
on' ,$25 per. pound ' for contained ber~ylliuin. In small quantities, the
beryllium master alloys are quoted as follows
PTUt per

Beryllium-copper containing 12 percent beryffium, balance copper $6. 25
Beryllium-iron containing 10 percent beryllium, balance iron 5. 00
Beryllium-nickel containing 10 percent beryffium, balance nickel , 5. CO
