Summary

• Two officers directing traffic on Rue Lane Xang, one of Vientiane's main thoroughfares. The large Lao style gateway in the center is the Patu Xay (Victory) Monument, also commonly referred to as the "Vertical Runway" since it was built with concrete intended by the U. S. for a new airport in Vientiane. The monument is in memory to those who fought in the struggle for independence from France. Note that at the time of this photo, the monument was not yet completely finished. (The top of the United States Information Service (USIS) building is visible above the trees on the left.)
