• In a classic 1940s view, this photograph shows Manitowoc Lincoln High School junior Don Van Groll working as a soda fountain clerk behind a tiled counter as students Don Vandersteen and Bob Gehrig sit at the counter on stools. One of the boys has a glass of "Coke" in hand while Van Groll draws another glass for the other boy. Prominently in view on the counter are a Coca-Cola dispenser and a display case containing packs of cigarettes. On the wall at the end of the counter are racks of magazines. This photograph was published as a full-page picture in the 1944 Manitowoc Lincoln High School annual, the "Flambeau." The specific location is not identified, but an article in the June 7, 1944 school newspaper "Hi-Tower Flashes" mentioned that Don Van Groll worked as a "soda jerk" at the various Park Drugs in the city. At that time there were three Park Drug Stores in Manitowoc, at: 1302 New York Avenue, 2101 Western Avenue, and 1222 Washington Street. This picture was probably taken at one of those stores.
