"Submariners" band at WOMT town hall

Summary

• Black and white photograph shows the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company employee band the "Submariners" on stage in the "Town Hall" meeting room at radio station WOMT, on April 20, 1943, in conjunction with their broadcast on WOMT's "We Build the Subs" program. A large U.S. flag and large war bond posters are on the wall at the back of the stage. The "Submariners," under the direction of Milton Detjen, played at every Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company launch ceremony as well as at war bond rallies and other events. A cropped version of this photograph appeared in the "Keel Block", April/May 1943, identifying the band members as: BACK ROW (L. to R.): Daniel Leider, Donald La Chance, Bob Wellhoefer, Virgil Petska, Donald Grun, William Dufano, Chester Steckmesser, Milton Detjen, Director, Melvin Gulseth, Richard Beckstrom, Donald Schuerer, Charles Sindelar, Alvin Schultz, John Vetter, and Hubert Buhk. FRONT ROW (L. to R.): William Maertz, Clarence Krall, Roger Hoepner, Stanley Woytal, Harold Lindeman, Eugene Handel, Leonard Gospodarek, Russell Krueger, Frederick Kirchoff, and Bob Mlada. Not present when the picture was taken were: Rollie Neilitz, Felix Woytal, Louis Tuesburg, Harry Hite, Joe Van Zon, and Joseph Kouril.
