According to tradition, this haversack was painted by Guy Butterfield of Waukesha, who carried it during his service with the 4th Infantry Regiment, Company A, during the Spanish-American War. Butterfield was the youngest son of Miles and Elizabeth Butterfield of Waukesha, Wisconsin.
