  • OTHER INFORMATION: Ways - 0593; Built at Wheeling, West Virginia 1864; first owned by George Feller and Thomas H. Reed, Wheeling, and George Laing, Lewis W. Cochran and Jeremiah Cochran, Monroe County, Ohio; came out with Ben Goodwin, master and Jerry Cochran, clerk. She was sold at St. Louis to Montana & Idaho Transportation Company, which was owned largely by John J. Roe and John G. Copelin. In spring 1865 she was loaded at St. Louis for a Missouri River trip, Captain John Jacobs, master; Horace E. Bixby, pilot; John Owens, first clerk; William Pim, second clerk; Captain James E. Yore helped pilot her to Omaha, Nebraska. On April 1, 1865 she was snagged and sunk above Omaha at Portage La Force, no life loss. Part of the deck cargo was recovered. A large quantity of quicksilver (mercury) consigned to Virginia City was aboard, and several attempts were made over the years to locate the wreck and recover it. The Missouri River had changed course, and the site of the wreck was located in February 1968 by two Omaha salvagers, Jesse Pursell and Sam Corbino, in the DeSoto bend 25 miles above Omaha. She was excavated in 1969, much general cargo removed, including some mercury. The scope and diversity of the salvaged freight surprised everybody, much of it well preserved, and removal was made by experienced delvers. Jerome E. Petsche authored a book on the subject in 1974, under the auspices of the National Park Service
