THE HENRY AND KATHERINE
KROLL FAMILY
Anthony Kroll I, was born in Pattern, Germany
in 1831. He came to Wisconsin in 1856 and was
married to Christine Nondorf I by Father Maz-
zuchelli, now up for beatification. Anthony pur-
chased a 1200 acre piece of land about five miles
SW of Highland, Wis., which was later divided
among his 6 children, one of whom was John Kroll
who married Anna Eiling (Gros Reken, Germany)
who became our paternal grandparents. He was
postmaster and owned the general store in this
area with Pierick's, in the lead mining district.
The maternal grandparents were Gertrude
Pierick, a descendant of a French Lord's daughter,
who married Anthony Nondorf II about 1880, at
Highland. He had come from Klein Reken, Ger-
many, and stayed at Kroll's until his marriage. In
fact, both grandmothers came to America together
on the same boat.

Ann, Helen, and Sophie Krukowski

KRUKOWSKI-HALVERSON
My parents came from Poland. My mother
Alexandra Dobrowolski came in 1911. Her older
brother Stanley was already here and settled in
Milwaukee; they worked in a foundry there.
My father Adam Krukowski came about 2 years
later, settling in Milwaukee where my parents
were married in 1915, and my sister Sophia was
born. In 1918 they moved to northern Wis. and set-
tled on a small farm in the town of Rusk where I
was born that year followed by a sister Anna and
brothers Joe, Frank, Stanley and Tadeus (Ted).
My father cleared more land and I never forgot
the rocks we picked. We lived in a log house that
was already there, building a little more to it, and
other buildings as needed. The main income was
from a few cows that were milked by hand. The
milk was separated and the cream was hauled to
Weyerhaeuser by horse and buggy, a trip of 14
miles one way. The milk was fed to hogs that were
raised for meat for the family. The first milkhauler
to start picking up milk by truck was Win.
Rathbun, hauling it to Chetek.
My only education was 8 years in the Bear Lake
School, walking over 2 miles each way except in
bad weather my father hauled us in a wood heated
cab on a sled drawn by 2 horses, picking up other
children on the way. Graduating in 1933 I left for
Chicago where I did housework for $2.50 and
$3.00 a week, coming back to the farm for the
summer, and going back for 2 more winters.
I met Harold in 1934 at the Twin Lakes Dance
Hall. We got married in 1936, and lived with his
folks on their farm east of New Alburn where they
had a dairy operation. Times were tough. The fall
of 1937 we went to Chicago with our infant
daughter Patsy. Harold got work in the National
Tea Bakery, working nights, later working for the
Crane Co. During this time my parents moved to
another farm formerly owned by Win. Rathbun.
My father died in 1939. My mother and
brothers kept the farm going until World War II
when the 3 oldest boys went into service and that's
when we moved back from Chicago to take over
the farm and kept a home for the family where our
son Ronald was born. We acquired more land,
built more buildings and switched our mixed dairy
herd to Registered Jerseys which was my pride and
joy.
It was not a happy time for me then we sold our
operation in 1979, and moved to Chippewa County
