Summary

• Several boys stand behind a row of Holstein heifers that are tied in open stalls in the dairy barn at the Manitowoc County Fairgrounds in Manitowoc, Wisconsin during a county fair in the 1940s. A sign identifies the cattle as being exhibited by the Cato Future Farmers 4-H Club. Crepe paper streamers are strung between the barn posts, and identification signs and prize ribbons are displayed above many of the animals. A “Boys’ and Girls’ Junior Fair” for 4-H and Future Farmers club members was part of the county fair, which was held annually even during the World War II years. The fairgrounds were located on North 18th Street in Manitowoc, on the site of the present Citizen Park. Typed on the back of this small snapshot is a caption “Manitowoc County’s future farmers, and their prize stock.”
