A "Victory Scrap Drive" was held on October 5, 1942, calling to the public to donate scrap metal for the war effort. A 7000-pound German howitzer, a relic of World War I that had formerly stood in front of the National Guard Armory, was added to the scrap pile to be recycled into arms for American forces.
