Library and Reading Posters

This collection contains a wide assortment of posters promoting books, libraries, and children's literacy from a variety of organizations including the American Library Association and the Children's Book Council. The CBC is a nonprofit conglomeration of publishers specializing in books for children and young adults and is the main supporter of the National Children's Book Week, the longest-running literacy program in the country, and the focus of a number of images in this collection. The images span the 1920s through 1980s. Because of this, it is possible to observe the influences of major artistic trends through these posters: from idealistic portrayals of families immersed in reading to Dadaist flights of fancy and everything in between.

The user will find works created by an impressive range of notable artists including Little House on the Prairie illustrator Helen Sewell, Charlotte's Web illustrator Garth Williams, corporate logo designer Paul Rand, woodcutter Antonio Frasconi, and Maurice Sendak, the author and illustrator of the highly acclaimed Where the Wild Things Are. This collection offers a rare glimpse at the talent of these artists outside of their traditional media whether it be children's books or other works.
