Duncan Williamson sings a classic ballad, “Queen Jane” (Roud no. 77; Child 170; Greig-Duncan no. 693). He comments that it was one of his grandmother Bett MacColl's songs. The recording was made by John Niles at the house where he was staying outside Ithaca, New York, when Williamson was his guest there for a week.
A recording of Williamson singing this song in 2001 is included in Mike Yates' double CD 'Travellers’ Tales', vol. 2 (Kyloe 101), track 8, with a transcription in Yates, 'Traveller's Joy: Songs of English and Scottish Travellers and Gypsies 1965-2005' (London: English Folk Dance and Song Society, 2006), pp. 98-99.
Tobar an Dualchais includes recordings of at least five versions (or fragmentary versions) of this ballad. Two of these feature Duncan Williamson, either singing it (track ID 33112, from 1976) or first diddling its tune and then singing it (track ID 60168, from 1977).
