made in abuinlance. and several modelers \were employed to
originate ornamental designis.  Porcelain hiscuit tovs and
figures Were also produced in large numbers. The 1.arian
ware was marked with a raised ribbon or scroll bearing the
initials of the potter\ ( L'. S. 1'.) and two variabie numbers,
indicating the size and shape, or pattern ( see illustratio" 31).
The Parian ware is of two varieties, a gravisi-white and
pure white. It is either decorated iln relief without coloring,
or possesses a pitted grotind in deep blue, against which the
raised white figures appear to good advantage. The pottery
