Visual display of the Blue Jeans

Blue Jeans

  • 1890
Cincinnati: Enquirer Job Printing Company
  • Color litho. At top main banner reads "Blue Jeans" with insert at left "Will Never Wear Out" and another at right "By Joseph Arthur/The Author of/"The Still Alarm." Image shows the famous buzz-saw scene with woman breaking in door with a chair to begin her rescue.
  • Arthur's most successful melodrama, which introduced the spectacle of hero or heroine being dragged toward a buzzsaw, was a hit in its premiere (176 performances) and continued to be revived for many years after (for instance in 1892 for several month at its original home of the 14th St. Theatre, and in 1908 at the Shakespeare Theatre, London). The original production starred Robert Hilliard and Judith Berolde. In 1917 it became a film with Viola Dana.
