Ardennes American Cemetery, Neuville-en-Condroz, Belgium
This cemetery, 90.5 acres in extent, is one of fourteen permanent World War II cemeteries constructed on foreign soil. The Cemetery is rectangular in shape. Its grave plots are arranged in the form of a Greek cross separated by two broad intersecting paths. Here are buried 5,238 of American Soldiers; three-fifths of whom were airmen American. Seven hundred seventy-seven headstones mark the graves of 792 «Unknowns». Among the headstones are 11 instances in which two brothers are buried side by side. There are also three cases in which two identified airmen are buried in single graves. The Missings of which there are 462, have their names and particulars engraved in 12 large slabs of gray granite located on the east and west sides of the memorial. Includes three 22x29 cm. laminated cards (description of cemetery, layout of cemetery, picture of shadow of monument on grass in cemetery) with velcro tabs at top so that they may be hung from bottom of textile panel. Also includes one 6x15 cm. laminated card with legend: Flight textile book two. 3 sheets fixed by "velcro" on textile panel.
Since 2007, Christine Kermaire has been visiting and studying plans of American cemeteries in Belgium, "aiming to present a work of collective memory in a legible, accessible manner."
