• This pair of safety glasses with head strap were used at the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company in Manitowoc, Wisconsin during the firm’s World War II submarine building program. They are described as “welding goggles,” but are representative of various types of protective eyewear worn by shipyard workers. Welders wore large welding helmets, often with goggles underneath to protect their eyes when the helmet visors were raised during some operations.
