In 1947, the Legislature created the Committee on Public Rec-
ords to safeguard the legal, financial, and historical interests of
the state in its public records. The committee consists of the
designated representatives of the Governor, Attorney General,
State Auditor, and Director of the State Historical Society. The
committee's efforts are co-ordinated with the state-wide records
management program of the Department of Administration by the
supervisor of that program who serves as secretary to the commit-
tee. The committee meets quarterly to pass upon requests of all
state agencies for the disposition of their records. It authorizes
the destruction of obsolete records and the transfer of records
having historical or research value to the State Historical Society.
The committee is responsible for the protection and preservation
of essential public records for the continuity of government. It
also establishes technical standards for microfilming by the state
and municipalities.
Since April 1960, when the committee began approving continu-
ing records disposal schedules, it has authorized the annual des-
truction of the equivalent of a thousand file cabinets of records,
in 756 records series.
