  • OTHER INFORMATION: Ways - 2254; General John Newton was a coal burner for 40 years, later oil. Captain E. Joe Pierce came out master in 1899 and retired at age 70, May 1936. Sponsons were added to the hull in 1936. She was declared surplus in 1957 and sold to the University of Minnesota and converted into a showboat called Minnesota Centennial Showboat. She was still in that capacity in 1978
