The Leopold Shack lies in Secs. 33 & 34, T. 13 N. R 6 E,
Sauk County, Wisconsin. 80 acres were purchased in April
1935, and later added to. After 1940 the property
comprised 123 acres.

The observations recorded in this Journal pertain to
this property, and often also the immediately
surrounding region south of the Wisconsin River.

The observations and entries were made by Starker, Luna,
Nina, and Carl Leopold, and myself, and at times by
guests whose names are given. The map used in this
volume was drawn by Carl Leopold in 1940.

A partial index to the contents is appended at the end
of this volume, together with certain summaries of data
useful in interpreting the contents. The weather records
are of Madison, 50 miles southeast.

No publications of these data have been made at this
writing, but a manuscript of tree-ring studies made on
the property by Carl Leopold (Bachelor’s thesis, 1941)
and a list of plants found in the vicinity by Carl
Leopold are in the files of the Botany Department,
University of Wisconsin.

An herbarium of the plants collected by Carl Leopold,
and a collection of skins of small mammals made by Carl
and Nina Leopold, are available at 2222 Van Hise Avenue,
Madison.

A Phenological Record started in 1936 exists as a
separate manuscript, and will be bound with volume 2 of
this Journal.
