Visual display of the Diffusion of hydrogen ions in a solution of phenol red across a differentially permeable membrane, and then up a column over one hour
Phenol red (a pH indicator) in an alkaline medium is inside the test tube and acetic acid is in the beaker. The tube is sealed with dialysis tubing. Here we see the consequences of the movement of hydrogen ions through the membrane - the phenol red changes color to yellow at a pH below 7. Note that the phenol red does not move across the membrane.
