Front and back of a small screw back sterling enamel Navy production award pin given to an employee of the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company in Manitowoc, Wisconsin during World War II. The front features white stars on a blue background circling a gold medallion that depicts an eagle and sailing ship. At the top is the letter “E” in white. A gold banner-shaped section projecting from the bottom carries the words “For Production.” On the back are the words “U.S. Navy Award,” “sterling,” and “Jostens,” which is the name of the company that produced these pins. During World War II the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company built submarines, landing craft, and ammunition boxes for the war effort, and was recognized with a Navy “E” award for excellence in production achievement. The initial award was presented in a ceremony on May 15, 1942, and the honor was subsequently renewed five times. In addition to commendations presented to the company, pins like this were awarded to individual workers. These images are copyright 2007 Young Communications Inc.
