physicians. The entire county has been designated as a federal shortage area
for psychiatrists. A
federal shortage area is one in which health manpower does not meet minimum
federal standards for
personnel per population for classes of health manpower covered by federal
legislation. The health
manpower supply for Forest County is summarized in Table 2-33.

Emergency Medical Services - In the project area, emergency medical services
are provided in
Crandon and the Township of Nashville. The Crandon Area Rescue Squad, Inc.,
provides ambulance
service to the area of Forest County surrounding Crandon, including the townships
of Crandon,
Lincoln, and Nashville. The ambulances are fully equipped. Emergency Medical
Services, Township
of Nashville, maintains two ambulances at the fire station in the Township
of Nashville. There are
seven emergency medical technicians, four first responders, and two registered
nurses.

Hospitals - No hospitals are located in Forest County. St. Mary' s Hospital
in Rhinelander and
Langlade Memorial Hospital in Antigo are the closest hospitals providing
primary acute inpatient care
(the least specialized level). Secondary care is available at the Wausau
Hospital Center. Tertiary
care (the most specialized level) is available in Marshfield, 140 miles from
Crandon. Serious illnesses
and accidents frequently require secondary or tertiary hospital care.

Health Services (Oneida County) - Health Staff - Oneida County has adequate
numbers of primary
care physicians. There also is an adequate supply of optometrists and registered
nurses. The number
of dentists and licensed practical nurses, however, is below standard. The
county has no resident
psychiatrists and is currently designated as a federal shortage area. Most
of the health care
professionals in the county are located in Rhinelander. The health staff
supply for Oneida County is
summarized in Table 2-34.
