500    $aEdited by John R. Parker and later by Charles Dingley, this musical periodical began as a four-page weekly but later became a semimonthly and finally a monthly. It included a brief history of music, recorded the progress of the art and proceedings of musical societies, and reviewed new musical works and musical performances. Contents also included musical pieces, biographical sketches of musicians, articles on inventions and improvements in musical instruments, and anecdotes. The second volume added a ladies' department "Ladies' Gazette," but this was later discontinued.$zCf. American periodicals, 1741-1900.
