Copies of two diaries of John Stewart made in the 20th century. The first diary chronicles Stewart's travels by ship from Greenock, Scotland, via Panama (although his obituary states he went via Cape Horn), to Columbia, California, during the California gold rush, leaving April 18?, 1855 and arriving July 5, 1855. A second diary covers his trip back home to Perth, Scotland, leaving from San Francisco on March 11, 1863, traveling through Nicaragua, up the east coast of the United States, during the height of the American Civil War and then on across the Atlantic arriving in Scotland on April 25, 1863. Also included in the second diary is an accounting of his expenses. Also includes a copy of Stewart's obituary.
