Papers, 1960s, consisting of the letters, pamphlets, flyers, and newsletters collected by Hank Werner and his wife Judy on their work with the Congress of Racial Equality and Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee during Freedom Summer. Started in June 1964, Freedom Summer endeavored to register as many African American voters as possible in Mississippi, a state that excluded African Americans from voting. The project also established a number of Freedom Schools, Freedom Houses, and community centers throughout small towns in Mississippi to aid the local African American population. Manuscripts also include Werner's anti-Vietnam War activities and the Madison Tenant Union.
