"The 8th edition of this classic text has been developed in and for a time that is seeing some of the most significant and fundamental shifts in the psychological and social experience of disability in human history. While prevailing ideas about the meaning of disability are being challenged and reconsidered and the personal, societal, and professional understanding of the experience of disability and chronic illness reexamined, many of the historic barriers and injustices faced by people with disabilities endure. At this critical period, and in the tradition of this series, the present edition comprehensively explores these issues, with new perspectives contributed by voices in disability and rehabilitation policy, research, and lived experience. Whether a student, educator, professional, or person living with a disability or chronic illness, this revised edition offers an informed, critical, and engaging exploration that will be relevant for those is the wide scope of professions concerned with the psychological and social experience of illness and disability. Readers of previous editions will appreciate the continued commitment to a diverse range of topics, from the historical and cultural perspectives on illness and disability, to the personal, familial, and social impacts of disability and from the most current rehabilitation and counseling approaches for working with specific populations to the broader social perspectives on disability issues. OVERALL GOAL OF THE BOOK The overall goal of this text is to provide the reader with a broad history of how people with chronic illness and disability (CID) have been viewed and treated throughout history and to examine and explore changes and developments over the last decade. Our goal is to provide students, educators, and professionals in rehabilitation counseling, disability studies, psychology, social work, sociology and related disciplines a comprehensive and current understanding of CID topics ranging from the impact of laws and policies, social justice issues for persons with CID and minority populations, climate and immigration, to more specific personal and professional issues of rehabilitation and the psychosocial experiences of CID, including disability identity, micro-aggressions, ableism, and the mental health impact of the increased use of social media platforms. CONTENTS As with prior editions, this book is organized into five parts. Part 1: Historical and Cultural Perspectives on Illness and Disability examines disability from a sociological and social psychological perspective, with chapters exploring the historical treatment of persons with disabilities, models of disability, disability identity, and ableism and discriminatory behavior towards people with disabilities. In Part 2 the authors explore The Personal Impact of Disability. Chapters in this section include theories and models of psychosocial adaptation and adjustment to disability; abuse, interpersonal violence, and psychosocial disparities among women with disabilities; sexuality and disability, and ableist microaggressions. Part 3 addresses Family Issues in Illness and Disability. Chapters in this section explore family adaptation across cultures, advocacy and challenges experienced by parents of children with disabilities, counseling aspects of grief, dying, and death, and psychosocial issues for family caregivers. In Part 4 we examine Specific Traumas and Stigmatized Populations, including the experience of living with substance use disorder and recovery, culturally competent service provision for veterans and family reintegration, responding to individuals experiencing abuse and relationship violence, the psychosocial cost of war and the experiences of immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers, and working with the aging population of persons with disabilities. Finally, Part 5 explores New Directions, Issues, and Perspectives through six chapters exploring interventions to improve the well-being of people with CID, assistive technology, religion and disability, social justice and disability counseling, the influence of social-media influence on mental health and concludes with the editors' reflections and considerations on the topics in this text"--
