Papers of John W. Cookson (Cobb, Wis.) who volunteered in the International Brigade, fighting with Loyalists in the Spanish Civil War, 1936-1939. He was a member of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade and was killed in action in 1938. He attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison prior to volunteering in the Brigade. Materials include correspondence from Cookson to his family, reminiscences of Cookson by fellow volunteers including Clarence Kailin, photos, newspaper clippings, and memorabilia. The papers were collected by Kailin to write Remembering John W. Cookson: a Wisconsin anti-fascist in the Spanish civil war, 1937-1938.
