Papers of Robert Burkert, a former professor who worked in the printmaking department before becoming head of the department at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. In 1980, he applied for and was approved for a grant to fund his project on the Works Progress Administration (WPA) and the work done for the WPA by Wisconsin artists during the Great Depression. The collection includes correspondence relating to the WPA grant, material for an exhibition on Wisconsin's New Deal Art, notes and research material from his project, and transparencies of artists and New Deal Art taken by Burkert for his research and presentation. Several of the transparencies are of murals painted in post offices throughout the state, sculptures, paintings, photographs of displaced persons during the Depression, as well as shots of WPA artists at work. Also included are two cassette tapes featuring interviews done by Burkert with WPA artists Schomer Lichtner, Ruth Grotenrath, and Robert Schwin. The interviews relate to the work done by these artists during the Depression and their experiences.
