1864 diary of Sever Severson, who lived in Dane County (Wis.) and worked as a wagon maker and wheelwright. Severson briefly served in the Civil War as part of the Quartermaster Corps from August 1864 to September 1864, when he died from illness in Georgia. The majority of the diary documents his work making wagons and wheels, and many of the entries discuss projects he was working on and how much the other men he employed worked each day. Severson often wrote about the weather, any social activities he engaged in, and any traveling he did. During his time in the Civil War, Severson worked as a blacksmith and wrote about making tool and chains. After falling ill on September 8, 1864, the majority of his entries discuss his health and diet. The final entry was written on September 26, shortly before his death. Typed transcriptions are available for research use.
